Focus on lack of diabetes care for millions of people living with the condition around the world.

This World Diabetes Day the theme will be ‘Education to protect tomorrow’ for the second year of the World Diabetes Day 2021-23 campaign.

Activities will focus on highlighting the need for better access to quality diabetes education for healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes.

World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. It is marked every year on 14th November, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who along with Charles Best, co-discovered insulin in 1922.

The World Diabetes Day campaign highlights that millions of people with diabetes around the world do not have access to diabetes care.

A World Diabetes Day statement said: “People with diabetes require ongoing care and support to manage their condition and avoid complications. We cannot wait any longer for: medicine, technologies, support and care to be made available to all people with diabetes that require them. Governments need to increase investment in diabetes care and prevention.”

It is estimated that more than 530 million people are currently living with diabetes worldwide, with millions more at risk of developing the condition.

A World Diabetes Day statement said: “The rising number of people affected by diabetes is putting added strain on healthcare systems. Healthcare professionals must know how to detect and diagnose the condition early and provide the best possible care; while people living with diabetes need access to ongoing education to understand their condition and carry out the daily self-care essential to staying healthy and avoiding complications.”

new online platform has been launched providing free interactive courses to help people with diabetes and their carers to understand and manage their condition.

For healthcare professionals, the IDF School of Diabetes offers a selection of free and premium online courses that help them to keep up-to-date with various aspects of diabetes management and treatment.
