Better Health campaign coincides with Commonwealth Games to encourage making healthier lifestyle changes.

Ahead of a busy summer of sport with the Commonwealth Games launched on 28th July, people are being encouraged to get more active.

The Public Health England and NHS Better Health campaign is offering a wide range of resources and recommendations for people to take up more activities to boost their mental and physical wellbeing.

A statement from the campaign organisers said: “The aim is to motivate and inspire people to try something new, taking advantage of the Commonwealth Games as a potential moment to improve health and wellbeing.”

The NHS Every Mind Matters website offers links to a range of activities for good mental health.

The site said: “There are little things we can all do to help look after our mental health. Having good mental health helps us relax more, achieve more and enjoy our lives more.

“We have expert advice and practical tips to help you look after your mental health and wellbeing, so discover what works for you.”

Resources available on the site include a mind plan quiz and tips on ways to get more active.

The get active guidance recommended: “It's the perfect time to get active. No matter how much you do, physical activity is good for your body and mind. Adults should aim to be active every day. Some is good – more is better still.

“A daily brisk walk can give your body a boost, lift your mood and make everyday activities easier.”

In addition, there are tips for looking after children’s mental health and self-care for young people.

A statement from Public Health England said: “The impact and experience of the past 18 months has been different for everyone, as have our reactions, but there’s no doubt it’s been a difficult time for us all. That’s why it’s so important to look after our mental health and wellbeing; now more than ever.

The DRWF information leaflet Exercise and diabetes explains why exercise is so important for people with diabetes: “People who exercise have lower blood pressure, lower heart rates and improved circulation. They also have lower cholesterol and less body fat, as well as higher rates of metabolism and consequently better weight control. They sleep better, have more energy, are less stressed/anxious and are happier and more confident.”
