DRWF is sponsoring the event set to be held in London this November.

Over the last five years Diabetes Professional Care has cemented its reputation as the UK’s largest free-to-attend, CPD-accredited (continuing professional development) conference for healthcare professionals working in diabetes care.

This year’s event is set to take place at Olympia, London, from 11th to 12th November – and DRWF looks forward to attending in our capacity as registration sponsors, sharing a wide range of health information related to diabetes with healthcare professionals attending the event.

The event is subject to government guidelines on social distancing measures.

DRWF attended the first Diabetes Professional Care (DPC) event at the Barbican in 2015, where DRWF Chief Executive Sarah Tutton met DPC founder Maggie Meer.

"I remember arriving at the Barbican and seeing this huge, queue snaking round the building. Somehow, I found myself at the very front of this immense queue, with my coat still on, stuffing delegate bags after Maggie had just thrust them at me. We’d not even been introduced at this point. It was such a lovely start to our relationship as it was so informal. It was very much, roll your sleeves up and get stuck in, and that’s pretty much how our relationship has continued."

Since then DPC has moved to the Olympia exhibition space in London, with last year’s event upgraded to the main hall at the venue.

Mrs Tutton added: “DRWF has supported DPC as the registration sponsor ever since then. We’ve watched the show grow and it’s been truly amazing to watch.”

The main objectives of the work done by DRWF is to raise awareness of diabetes, provide support to people and to fund research into finding a cure.

Mrs Tutton said: “DPC’s aims sit comfortably with ours in that we want healthcare professionals to have access to the very latest and most up-to-date information so they can support people with diabetes in the most appropriate and effective way.

“DPC gives us a platform so we can access the multi-disciplinary team, health representatives and health officials. This is important to us as it gives us valuable visibility among those who can really make a difference.”

DRWF plans to showcase our new digital resources that have been put together during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mrs Tutton said: “The pandemic has had a huge impact on us from a practical sense. In the lead-up to lockdown in late March, we had to work incredibly hard to ensure that we had all of the necessary resources and equipment in place to enable our team to work remotely. It was quite a challenge, as we were not set up to work in this way.

“But we’re a cohesive team and I think we’ve overcome the hurdles and challenges that have been thrown at us so far. Last year we invested in digital communications expertise, which was quite fortunate timing as this has enabled us to be more nimble than we might have been in moving some of our offline activities online – particularly where we are unable to hold our educational events in person. We’ve been able to create new digital support resources which will be available shortly and will be something we’ll showcase at DPC.”

She added: “We’ve dug deep and in many respects – while there’s still a long way to go – we’ve pulled it out of the bag in the past few weeks. We’ve not dropped the ball in terms of staying in touch with people who need us. We have a lot of people who rely on us for regular support. Covid-19 has impacted everyone, but for a lot of people who live alone and may be shielding it’s crucial we are always contactable.”

DPC founder Maggie Meer said: “It is vital we ensure all populations who have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes are included to ensure standards of diabetes care are improved. At DPC we work very hard to produce a programme which ensures healthcare professionals who attend the show, leave with the confidence and skills to treat each individual based on the latest guidelines and treatment options that are currently available.”
