Hospital admissions where obesity is a factor up by more than a fifth

Recently published NHS figures finds 23% more people admitted to hospital with obesity-related complications.
A recently published report from NHS Digital has highlighted that more people have been admitted to hospital over the last year where obesity has been a factor.
Statistics on Obesity, Physical Activity and Diet, England, 2020 is an annual report of new information, including hospital admissions and prescription items, and previously published information such as obesity prevalence among adults and children.
Being overweight can lead to a number of additional health complications – including type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Key findings from the report included that 11,117 hospital admissions were directly attributed to obesity. This figure is a rise of 4% compare to 10,660 admissions in 2017-18.
In addition, there was 876,000 hospital admissions were obesity was a factor. This is an increase of 23% compared to 711,000 admissions in 2017-18.
The majority of adults where overweight or obese – including 67% of men and 60% of women. This included 26% of men and 29% of women who were obese.
It was reported that a fifth (20%) of year 6 schoolchildren were classified as obese. This figure more than doubled in the most deprived areas.
The report found that less than half of children and young people (47%) were meeting current physical activity guidelines.
Around two thirds (67%) of adults were considered active within recommended government guidelines.
